If you're looking for a unique little west Texas city to come to visit over a weekend for really good food and drinks this spring or this summer, I got it for you. Abilene!

The International Plate from Grain Theory

Abilene Texas, 1 hour and 30 minutes drive North East of San Angelo, is a city of about 125,000 people. It is home Dyess AFB and Hardon Simmons University as well as Abilene Christian University, the city echos much the same feel as my hometown of San Angelo with its primary organizations being an Air Force base, universities, and a hospital. The same west Texas feel is quite apparent as well. The food and drink scene also tends to hit well above its weight for a city this size much the same way San Angelo does.

In my now four trips to this city for various reasons, I have found four truly key spots that any foodie must put on their list of places to go and try out if you pass through town or make this a destination city for a typical Friday-Sunday weekend getaway. You cannot go wrong with these spots but know there are likely many more to find here beyond this list below. Here we go…

The Mill Winery & Event Center — (photos)

Wine down yoga, keg wine pours, indoor and outdoor seating, awesome staff!

Amber Dragon Meadery- (photos)

Ronald is a character! You must meet this man and chat with him! The Mead is outstanding!

The Shed BBQ and Meat Market- (photos)

Some of the best BBQ in Texas IMO. Amazing people work here!

Grain Theory- (photos)

Craft beer, coffee, wine, food, all in one place!

Honorable Mention spots for quick stops and time fillers:

Monks Coffee Shop- Hip little place with great coffee and every walk of life you can imagine. Cozy, quaint, a bit hippy. Feels like a huge living room to relax in.

The Hallows- A swanky, modern, and sophisticated coffee and cocktail bar, plus a dance club with nightly DJ entertainment. Right across from Monks Coffee Shop.

Frontier Texas Museum- The place to go for your local history fix hands down! Give 2 hours time to take it all in! Really nifty place for the history nut or whole family.

Front Porch Coffee Co.- Another great place for coffee and baked goods! Right across the road from Frontier Texas Museum.
